Greenland- The World’s Largest Island

Many have experienced strange dreams in their routine lives. Many children wonder why the sun doesn’t come out at night and why they cannot see icebergs floating on water. A land that fulfills this unusual, yet absolutely beautiful picture-perfect dream, is Greenland. Greenland is a place that contains one twentieth of the world’s ice as well as one tenth of the world’s freshwater. About eighty-five percent of the land in Greenland is covered by ice.

The western coast features a majority of Greenland’s tourist attractions. It is a common sight for icebergs to float by in the water. Dolphins and whales are also common. The midnight sun is visible yearly in Greenland as well. The midnight sun seems so pleasant at times that the day actually appears to be endless, and with the birds chirping and children enjoying their football games it is a must-see.
The best time to visit Greenland is during the summer that is when it is not that cold. It is advisable for a first timer not to travel all by themselves. Most of the population is able to communicate in English but the national language is different. One surprising fact is that there aren’t any daily newspapers in Greenland. There are only weekly publications that do the rounds. There are no public phone booths around the island, so tourists would have to make calls from their hotels. Another good aspect of the island is that in case of any acute illnesses or medical problems, medications and other treatments are absolutely free of cost.
Greenland has great collections of statues and carvings made from wood, animal teeth, bone, soapstone, reindeer horns, etc. These are quite popular amongst tourists. Most of the tourist locations lie on the west coast, and there are regular passenger ships to ferry/navigate tourists along the coastline.

The climate conditions are unpredictable, especially on boats and on cruises. One must be prepared for any kind of weather. One must carry all the possible clothing for a varied climatic condition, right from an umbrella or a raincoat to shorts and t-shirts. Despite the weather, cruises available on the western coast are filled with fun. One can enjoy all the wildlife on the journey combined with the massive glaciers and icebergs.
The places most visited by tourists are Disko Bay, Ilulissat, Qaanaak, Kangaatsiaq, Narsarsuaq, Narsaq, Kulusuk, Kangerlussuaq, and Nuuk. Fishing is one of the favorite activities of tourists, but they have to obtain a license from the local government before going fishing. If caught without one, the fishing equipment could be confiscated and due fine will be imposed.
Ilulissat is also known as the iceberg town. In fact, the name ‘Ilulissat’ means icebergs in the Greenlandic language. This place is beyond imagination, with big, bulky glaciers that stay for a long time, until they are carried away by the strong. These are a treat to the naked eye. The gigantic Ilulissat ice fjord was admitted to UNESCO’s World List of Heritage Sites.

There are a couple of other destinations that can also be explored. To the north there are many heritage buildings from the colonial era. These constructions have now been transformed into huts and restaurants that can be rented. A short journey further north would take you to the Egi glacier. This absolute treat by nature can be enjoyed peacefully by staying there for a couple of days in a rented hut. The total population of the town is approximately 4,500, and the population of sled dogs there is 4000. This is surely an indication of how important sled dogs still are as a source of transport, even in today’s world of modern technology.
Qaanaak is the northern-most municipality in the world. It is known specifically for its original hunting culture. Kangaatsiaq, on the other hand, is a new town. It has been given the status of a town just recently, in the year 1986. Kangaatsiaq is one of the most untouched places in Greenland. There are many other places that are water bound that can be explored with the assistance of boats and kayaks.
The southern part of Greenland is the complete opposite of northern Greenland. It is filled with fertile valleys and flowering plains. This region has large mountain landscapes that are very rich in minerals, which has allowed the region to establish a thriving farming industry and other animal husbandry related occupations. Narsarsuaq, Narsaq, Qaqortoq, etc lie in this region. Narsarsuaq, meaning ‘great plain’, is surrounded by huge mountains and beautiful glaciers on all sides. Hiking and treks are arranged on a regular basis. It is wise to take one of the hiking tours to admire the exquisite beauty of this place and experience the fresh air.

The eastern part of Greenland is comparatively unsophisticated with regard to tourist attractions because it was first explored by tourists less than a hundred years ago. Hence the purity is still intact and can be recognized easily. The largest National Park in the world is found in this part of Greenland. It covers almost 386,000 square miles.
