Bhutan, also known as land of Thunder Dragon, is ruled by kings until its transition to democracy in early 2008. In the 8th century, holy man Guru Rinpoche established Tantric Buddhism and now it has become the official religion. The country began to modernize in the 1960s, and tourism emerged in the '70s, with the introduction of currency, paved roads, media and hospitals. Television and the internet arrived in 1999 coinciding with the silver jubilee celebration of Fourth King, Jigme Singye Wangchuck.
Bhutan's cautious balanced approach to development and modernization ensures that its tourism industry is operated sustainably. Tourism must not only be economically viable, but also sensitive to the local culture and environment. No restrictions are imposed on the number of tourists to Bhutan. However, the policy of High value, Low volume/impacts tourists ensures that Bhutanese tradition and culture can be preserved and numbered without exception.
Bhutan's cultural heritage is wonderfully displayed in museum, dzongs (fortress), temples, chortens (Buddhist funeral monuments or stupa), arts and crafts, handicrafts and textiles. Many if not all are opened to westerners and you will be awed by places like Taktsang (tiger nest) and Drakarpo (White cliff). You may become fascinated when you hear that the country aims at a standard of Gross National Happiness, that the education and medical care are free and that the air is purer than anywhere else on earth.
