SECURITY
The almost constant political troubles Chad has lived through since independence (war against Lybia) and is still living today have hampered the development of its tourist potential. Travelling out of Ndjamena is still highly risky, which is why the Chadian authorities issue visit permits for movement within the country. Northern Tibesti is notably the territory of armed rebel groups including the MDJT (Movement for Democracy and Justice in Chad), which is still active and ready to fight against government armed forces.
Regions to avoid: Districts of Borku, Ennedi and Tibesti.
Useful telephone numbers:
Emergency service: 17

ALL OF THE EDITORIAL TEAM'S ADVICE
Get registered at the police station within 72 hours of your arrival in Chad. If you intend to leave Ndjamena and walk around the country, you'll need a permit issued by the Interior Minister. Beware, this can take quite some time! You'll also need an authorisation from the Ministry of Information to take snapshots; this however does not grant you the right to take snapshots randomly, especially snapshots of administrative buildings. Show respect to those you meet: dress decently and avoid consuming alcohol in muslim neighbourhoods and villages. Observe safety instructions!
