Like the rest of South Africa, the East Cape features exquisite natural attractions, spectacular landscapes and a colorful cultural scene. As the home province of big political figures such as Nelson Mandela and Steve Biko, it is also a good venue for history enthusiasts and politically-inclined tourists. Considering that it is the second biggest province in the country, it has so much to offer visitors when it comes to places to visit and exciting things to do while in the area.
One of the most visited destinations in the East Cape is the historic and stunning Port Elizabeth. It features almost 25 miles of magnificent coastline, giving tourists a vast playground for sun-tanning, swimming and wide-ranging water sports activities. You can choose from among the countless beaches available in the area. If you are into water adventures and crowded beaches, you will find a great place to hang out in Algoa Bay or the Bluewater Bay. However, if lovely views and tranquility are what you are looking for then you better stay within the beaches of Beachview and Blue Horizon Bay. If you are into wilder seascapes and unspoiled beaches, then you better check out Maitlands and its sand dunes, as well as Sardinia Bay and Virgin Bay.
Avid walkers will find the scenic and historical Donkin Heritage Trail in Port Elizabeth a delight. It features a 3-mile trail that retraces the path of the 1820 Settlers starting from the market square, past the colorful and iconic Donkin street houses, the campanile and the fantastic views of Algoa Bay it affords, numerous churches and so much more historically significant sites.
However, if you love to ride the bike instead of going for a walk there is also something special for you – the Baakens River Mountain Bike Trail. Don't worry if you do not have a bike in tow, outfitter companies exist for that purpose and there are plenty of them around here. Conquer the 14-mile marked trail and enjoy the striking vista you will enjoy along the way.
Love pretty little flowers? Then have a visual feast on thousands of gorgeous blooms at the Van Stadens Wild Flower Reserve. This 500 mile flower extravaganza is beyond imagining. Bring along a picnic basket when planning to explore the reserve. Enjoy lazy strolls along wooded slopes, stop every so often to gaze at the vast plateau of flowers and if you have found that perfect picnic spot, spread the blanket and enjoy your meal amidst colorful blooms. If you want to explore further, it is best to bring along a mountain bike and take advantage of the flat gravel roads around the plateau section of the area.
If you cannot get enough of South Africa's nature reserves, there is another one to visit just 15 and half miles from Port Elizabeth – the Island Nature Reserve. It is the best place to go if you want to explore coastal forests, interesting fauna and discover fantastic views of the sea whenever you feel like getting a glimpse of this fantastic geogrpahy. There are picnic facilities on site and the Bushbuck hiking trail is a must for walking or hiking enthusiasts.
There are also several other destinations that many visitors will find interesting. Sports fans may want to play a round of golf at the beautiful Walmer Country Club and Humewood or Port Elizabeth golf clubs. You may also want to catch a game of cricket at St. Georges Park.
If you find lion cubs particularly cute and cuddly then the Seaview Lion Park is a must for you. Finally, if history is more your cup of tea then check out what is in store for you at the Bayworld Museum Complex and Fort Frederick.
